| | | | | | Conference of family lawyers | | | The annual conference and agm of the Family Lawyers Association will take place from November 11th to November 13th in the Merchant Hotel, Belfast. Up to five CPD points are available.
It will be opened jointly by the attorneys general of Ireland and Northern Ireland, Máire Whelan and Jim Larkin, in the former Bar Library, the Royal Courts of Justice on Chichester Street. They will also launch a new all-Ireland family law initiative.

| | | | | | Arbitration Ireland conference | | | Arbitration Ireland is holding a conference on Making Ireland a Centre for International Arbitration in the RDS in Dublin on Monday next (Oct 10) from 2pm-5.30pm. The panel will include a number of leading international practitioners and corporate counsel as well as leading domestic practitioners.
The conference will examine the importance of arbitration in international trade, the advantages of Ireland as a venue for international arbitration and practical aspects of conducting an arbitration under the 2010 Act.

| | | | | | Alternatives to litigation | | | A conference on alternatives to litigation in a civil society will immediately precede the ABA conference, taking place next Tuesday (Oct 11), from 11am-5.30pm, in the Convention Centre.
Co-hosted by the International Centre for Dispute Resolution, the American Arbitration Association and TCD, the conference gives attendees the opportunity to be present at both events.
Speakers include the Chief Justice Ms Justice Susan Denham; Mark Appel, senior vice-president of the International Centre for Dispute Resolution; Patricia O’Brien, under-secretary general for Legal Affairs and UN Legal Counsel; and Lada Busevan, senior operations officer at the investment climate department of the World Bank Group.

| | | | | | American Bar Association meets in Dublin | | | Key challenges within the legal profession due to the economic downturn and technology, as well as global regulatory and competition issues, will be on the agenda as the American Bar Association’s section of international law comes to the Convention Centre in Dublin from October 11th to 15th, for its autumn meeting.
The opening plenary session at 11am on Wednesday October 12th will be addressed by President Mary McAleese, which will be followed by a luncheon with former president and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson.
On October 13th, former Chief Justice Mr Justice John Murray will speak during the session, from 12.45pm-2.15pm.

While most of the courts are not sitting during August and September, the President of the High Court has arranged for special sittings of the High Court in September to deal with the backlog in asylum judicial reviews, and the District Court sits in September.

| | | | | | Refugee Council gets new CEO | | | Sue Conlon, a leading Immigration and Asylum Lawyer in the UK for over twenty two years has been pointed Chief Executive of the Irish Refugee Council replacing Robin Hannan.
Having first studied law in the late 1970’s she worked for years in the wider field of anti racism before returning to study law, this time with an emphasis on Social Welfare Law, particularly Social Security, housing, children, race relations and immigration.
Her practice involved advocacy before the UK Asylum and Immigration Tribunal.
She also worked politically in the defence and promotion of human rights.
